Our Work
Where Data Meets Action for Rights of Nature
Redefining Conservation, Reimagining Coexistence
Protecting leatherback sea turtles. Empowering nature.
Transforming our future.
The Leatherback Project is a global conservation initiative using the leatherback sea turtle as a powerful ambassador for ocean and coastal protection. As one of the widest-ranging marine species on Earth, the leatherback connects global marine and terrestrial ecosystems, making it a powerful symbol for protecting the interconnected systems that sustain life on Earth. Strengthened by science, catalyzed by community action, and showcased through storytelling, we advocate for the recognition of the Rights of Nature, where species and ecosystems have the right to exist, persist, thrive, regenerate vital cycles, be restored, and have legal representation in court.
Where Science Meets Storytelling,
and Action Inspires Change
At The Leatherback Project, we bring together science, advocacy, community partnerships, and storytelling to protect leatherback sea turtles and the ecosystems they connect. By grounding our work in evidence and equity, we help shape policies, support frontline communities, and inspire action across borders. Nature knows no country bounds and our collective well-being depends on radical collaboration. Explore our projects and join a global effort to live in harmony with Nature.

Science
We use a multifaceted scientific approach to protect leatherback sea turtles and other endangered marine species. Our work includes field research guided by ecological knowledge, technological innovation co-created with community partners to develop effective, evidence-based conservation strategies.

Advocacy
Our advocacy advances legal protections for marine life by championing groundbreaking initiatives like Panama’s National Rights of Nature Law (Law 287), which formally recognizes Nature’s legal rights, including the right to exist, persist, and regenerate its life cycles; and affirms the responsibility of both the state and people to defend these rights in court.
